Characterization of Maize Genotypes (Zea mays L.) for Resistance to Striga asiatica and S. hermonthica and Compatibility with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. strigae (FOS) in Tanzania

Striga species cause significant yield loss in maize varying from 20 to 100%. The aim of the present study was screen and identify genotypes with partial resistance S. hermonthica (Sh) asiatica (Sa) compatible Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. strigae (FOS), a biocontrol agent. Fifty-six were evaluated for Sh Sa, FOS compatibility. Results showed that treatment significantly (p < 0.001) enhanced management compared untreated control under both Sa infestations. mean grain reduced by 19.13% FOS-untreated 13.94% same treated infestation. Likewise, infestation, FOS-treated had reduction 18% while 21.4% treatment. Overall, based on emergence count, host damage rating, compatibility, infestations, 23 carrying farmer preferred traits identified. are useful genetic materials development Striga-resistant cultivars Tanzania related agro-ecologies.
